I know it’s not windows, but if you want to learn some Linux, there is sadservers.com/. It will give you a task to complete on a real server, or something that’s broken. Then you figure out how to debug it and fix it! I’m not sure if there’s an equivalent Windows site, but that may get you started. To learn more about troubleshooting, you could look up SRE blogs and post-mortems. There’s a lot of systems design that is agnostic, and it wouldn’t hurt to find some cloud based examples.

Finished the 3rd SadServers challenge: The Command Line Murders 🗡️

This scenario is set up as a murder mystery you solve entirely through the terminal. Clues are scattered across files for people, streets, vehicles, and interview transcripts where I used familiar commands like grep, head, tail, and awk.

I was familiar with using these commands, but this challenge pushed me to explore different ways of using them. For example, I used grep with the options -B and -A to print the context before and after a matching line, and awk 'FNR == 179' to jump straight to line 179 of a particular file. I've documented my notes and solution to this challenge in 01-linux/labs/sadservers on Github: lnkd.in/eNSKs5DM

Definitely the most fun way I've practised Linux commands so far, looking forward to working through more of these SadServers lab exercises.

If you’re looking for the DevOps/SRE equivalent of a LeetCode challenge, I highly recommend checking out SadServers. I recently tackled the "Saint John: what is writing to this log file" troubleshooting scenario. It’s a fantastic, hands-on exercise for sharpening real-world Linux diagnostics and system observability skills.

Quick troubleshooting highlight:
After identifying and terminating the culprit, I used a quick sleep interval to monitor the log file and verify its size had stopped growing, confirming the correct process was dead.

Example: ls -l /var/log/bad.log; sleep 5; ls -l /var/log/bad.log

Great platform for anyone in the DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Kubernetes space 😉 looking to test their problem-solving under pressure.

Check it out here: SadServers.com

Solved My First Production-Style Linux Crisis in Under 5 Minutes.

Just completed a real-world troubleshooting scenario on SadServers (a platform for hands-on Linux challenges).

Here the challenge is that, A rogue process was continuously writing to a log file (/var/log/bad.log),

filling up disk space and threatening system stability.

So my duty was to find and terminate it without deleting the file.

And Here is my Approach.

First, I have to check for the hostname, pwd, whoami and uname to be sure I'm in the correct place.

Then, I went on to Identify the log file being written to by using process monitoring to find the culprit,

Terminated the process safely,

And Verified the fix.

All these happened within 4 minutes, 17 seconds.

Why this matters:
This exact scenario happens in production environments when:

Test programs get left running,

Misconfigured apps spam logs,

Memory leaks cause runaway processes.

And Being able to diagnose and fix these issues quickly prevents:

❌ Server crashing
❌ Service downtime
❌ Lost revenue
❌ Angry customers

So never underestimate any issue or sign even if the smallest of it, because the impact might be so huge than you expect.

What production problem are you currently facing in your organisation?

Working through the Sad Servers challenges has been a fun way to sharpen my Linux troubleshooting skills in a hands-on environment.
Each scenario simulates real-world production issues — from runaway processes to misconfigured services — and the goal is simple: investigate, understand what’s happening under the hood, and fix it.
It’s a great reminder that in Linux, good debugging often comes down to curiosity, careful observation, and knowing where to look.
Slowly working through the levels and documenting what I learn along the way.

Here's what 6 years in production taught me at troubleshooting as a DevOps.

Processes. Sockets. Memory pressure. DNS resolution. The engineers who stay calm during incidents aren't the ones who know the most tools.
They're the ones who know what questions to ask the system.
Most people spend 3 months on tutorials. 2 days of real broken servers beats that every time.

→ SadServers → Linux fundamentals + CLI muscle. Fix them. Exactly what Senior interviews. sadservers.com

→ OverTheWire: Bandit — builds the CLI thinking pattern that actually matters. lnkd.in/eEGSc7kd

Both free. Both brutal. Both worth it.

The market is brutal right now. But engineers who understand why things break are never unemployed long.
Where are you stuck — fundamentals or chasing tools? Drop it below.

I’ve been using SadServers to sharpen my Linux server skills, and it’s been excellent. The scenarios feel realistic, not contrived, and they force you to think like an operator under pressure. It’s hands-on, practical, and way more engaging than passive tutorials. Highly recommended for anyone serious about leveling up their Linux troubleshooting skills.

Just found SadServers and it’s exactly what I wish existed when I was learning Linux the “real” way, plus, it's completely 🆓.

It’s basically LeetCode for Linux & DevOps troubleshooting 💻: you’re dropped into live servers with realistic incidents, and you have to diagnose + fix issues using real sysadmin/DevOps skills (logs, processes, networking, permissions, services, etc.). 🔍⚙️🌐

What I like most: the hint system keeps you moving without just handing you the answer. 💡✅

If you’re prepping for cloud/DevOps interviews or you want sharper on-call instincts, this is seriously solid practice.
